The best (and cheapest!) DIY face mask you'll ever use

2:01 PM

So about a week ago I posted this photo on Instagram, showing how my skin looked straight after using my favourite DIY face masque (and totally bare-faced too - eeeek!).

As promised, here is my beyond easy recipe for making a cheap aspirin mask that, with a simple tweak, is suitable for all skin types. It's not anything new or original, but I'm always finding people who haven't tried it yet! I use it weekly, and it leaves my skin super smooth and helps nip breakouts in the bud. I do not recommend for use by people with a sensitivity to aspirin or damaged skin.

DIY Aspirin Mask

Method

1) Pop the tablets into your dish and crush them into a powder using a mini mortar and pestle, back of a fork or similar.

2) Add your drops water slowly, just enough to create a gluggy paste.

3) Add your extra of choice, just a few drops of honey, rosewater, lemon or tea tree. I always use honey when using as an all-over mask as I have dry skin, but opt for tea-tree when treating individual pimples. You do you, dawg.

4) Smear all over your face and try to avoid anyone seeing your now grotesque face. Trust me, this mask isn’t pretty.  Allow to dry. Bits will fall off, so maybe keep a towel tucked in your lap while sipping your tea. Unless you have a headache, that is...

5) Moisten your hands with warm water and gently massage over face like you're using a face scrub. Work your fingers into the corners and crevices around your nose where all the blackheads hide. Rinse with warm water, pat to damp and apply your normal toner, serum and moisturiser. Bask in compliments about your glowing skin.

So how does it work? Aspirin contains salicylic acid which kicks arse at knocking out pimples and tightening and unplugging blocked pores. Aspirin also acts as a gentle exfoliant and anti-inflamatory.

As for the treatment additives, honey has antiseptic and healing properties, tea tree oil is a pimple zapper, rose water softens and soothes, lemon energises and brightens. Pick your poison according to your skin's needs or mix n match.

Tried this treatment before? I'm keen to hear your experiences with DIY!

  3. I never heard about aspirin being used as a facial mask! Think I will try this although I consider 5-6 aspirin quite much...? I usually use honey + green tea as a treatment :) You don't wanna be seen with that in your face as well.....

  4. I thought this was only for breakout-prone skin... Hmmm might try it. I get a pimple about once a year, so I didn't ever really think this was something I should try
